Synopsis

The same set of measures applied on a large scale will produce identical or very similar results in different societies and at different times.

How is it possible that places with multiform histories present so many similarities and at the same time arouse the same indifference? How in fact is the latter articulated?

Here we find ‘La Même Indifférence’.

Approach

The city is the greatest achievement of human beings in their attempt to reconstruct the world in which they live. However, in its eagerness to configure a world to suit itself, it has created an oversized model of the city. Understanding the multiple layers that make up the urban becomes an increasingly complex task. Orcasur may seem distant to many, but it is barely 7 km from the center of Madrid. The same is true of similar neighborhoods all over the world, where the real and perceived distance from the center of the cities to which they belong is an abyss.

Perceived distance is closely linked to the very idea of modernity. The city is the setting in which new technologies and new ways of life aim to improve the human condition. However, the yearnings of modernity, blinded by the grandeur of the new, are questionable. Rationalization and high-density urbanization have contributed to the social divide, concentrating wealth, power and resources in the hands of a few, in the face of the great precariousness of many others relegated to marginality, even though they all coexist in the density of the urban landscape. The city thus becomes a field of exclusion, imposed by those few who reinforce the fear of the other, the most precarious, the poor.
